1 c buttermilk
1 t baking soda
5 eggs, separated
2 c sugar
1/2 c shortening
1/2 c butter, room temp
2 c sifted flour
1 t vanilla
1. Preheat oven to 325
2. In a mixer, beat egg whites until stiff and then set aside. While the egg whites beat, stir the buttermilk and baking soda together and set aside.
3. Cream sugar, butter, shortening, and yolks together in a mixer.
4. Add buttermilk mixture to the sugar mixture. Mix well. Then alternate adding flour and vanilla to the batter. (Start and end with flour) Mix well.
5. Using a whisk, fold in the egg whites.

6. Pour the batter into greased pans and bake for 25-30 mintues.
